Having saved up several thousand dollars since our wedding the previous November, we quit our jobs and left Nashville in August, 1976, storing most of our belongings with Gloria's parents in Montgomery, Alabama.

Gloria & Mr. Squinty all packed up and ready to leave
First, we went to Illinois to help my mother sort through the accumulated Mason family possessions at the Barrington farm in preparation for a yard sale, which took place in September. Then we traveled by car out to the west coast and up to the Bobb Inn in central British Columbia to visit my brother Don for a month or so. After that we returned to Chicago, flew from there to Montgomery, and then to Wilmington, where we departed by freighter for our European adventure.

Throughout our travels in Europe Gloria kept a diary, which is what makes it possible to share our recollections and photos from this journey so many years later.
